Ilmington the best place to live in the Midlands

A picturesque south Warwickshire village has been named as the best place to live in the Midlands.

Ilmington beat off competition from other towns and villages in the region including Market Harborough, to be crowned the Midlands’ winner.

With its beautiful setting, ancient church and wonderful community spirit, Ilmington was described by the judges from the Sunday Times’ list as a “blissful example of village life as it should be”.

Situated on the edge of the Cotswolds and close to Shipston-on-Stour and Stratford-upon-Avon, Ilmington dates back to the 10th century when it was known as Ylmandunes. This evolved into Elmington as a result of its many elm trees, sadly now gone as a result of Dutch elm disease.

Among its claims to fame is the 1934 Royal Christmas message was broadcast by King George V from Ilmington Manor, home of the illustrious and philanthropic Flower family, of Flowers beer fame. It was introduced by 65-year-old Walton Handy, a local shepherd, with carols from the church choir and bell ringing from the church.

To those who call the village their home, it’s no surprise it scored so highly. There are good pubs, a school, sports clubs, a 12th century church and a community shop which boasts more than 100 volunteers who help run it.

Sheldon Bosley Knight’s sales manager Amy Nicholson said: “Ilmington is a fabulous place to live. There is a real sense of community, a lovely village school making it an ideal find for families, a fantastic park and sports grounds. The community shop and cafe is the hub of the village as well as the traditional Red Lion pub and the award-winning Howard Arms.

“It’s the ideal place to be tucked away, off the main tourist track but with the Cotswolds and countryside on the doorstep.

“There are a variety of houses from chocolate box cottages, family homes and larger country homes so something for everyone!”

The overall winner of the Best Place to Live in the UK is Saffron Walden in Essex.
