They say a direct approach is often the best way to get attention. That was certainly the case for aspiring architect, Noah Taylor, who has just finished a week of work experience in our planning and architecture team.
Earlier this summer he walked into the office with his CV, asking to speak to our head of department, Natasha Blackmore da Silva.
Noah, who is just about to start his final year at Lancaster University, wanted to find out more about career options after he had competed his architecture degree course so the team invited him to spend a week in the office learning the ropes.
During his time in the office, Noah found out more about the department, the work it does and learned how to use some of the specialist equipment. This included an introduction to the wider planning process, how the RIBA Plan of Work works in action and a seminar on the recent changes to Class Q permitted development policies.
He was given his own project, that of a Class Q development which he designed from scratch before presenting to the team for feedback towards the end of the week. It was also valued by one of the residential sales negotiators who gave feedback with improvements for how he could achieve a higher valuation.
Noah said: “Over the week I’ve covered a diverse range of projects that blend creativity and problem-solving – from concept to execution.
“Processes included building survey, planning application preparation and project presentation.
“I particularly enjoyed developing my own proposal for a real Class Q development and carrying out a survey, feasibility studies and 3D modelling up the detailed scheme for the delivery of the project.”
Senior architectural technician Charlie Cartwright said: “Noah showcased significant talent, effectively using BIM to develop and present sketched ideas, and he produced impressive, rendered graphics for his proposal.
“We wish him all the best for his promising future career.”
Natasha said: “We learnt a lot from Noah. He introduced us to some alternative modelling and rendering software and gave a fresh perspective on some of the projects we are currently working on.
“His final project, a culmination of all he has learnt this week, shows his skill and attention to detail and I am sure the client would be very happy to see this as their future home.”
